Virginia HEPC Training Path

Virginia HEPC is here to help you learn how to implement a hepatitis C treatment program in your clinic. We do this through in-person and virtual training conferences, a guided online option to work with your staff to get started, and a monthly community of practice (COP) to discuss your questions, learn from others in the VA HEPC network, and share your site’s successes.

Treating hepatitis C (HCV) has recently become more straightforward. It no longer requires injections, special monitoring, or multiple negative side effects. The current regimen is an oral medication taken daily for 8-12 weeks, with most patients experiencing none or minimal side effects. Lab work is required before treatment and 12 weeks after treatment.

As of January 2019, Virginia regulations allow any Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP) to treat HCV and do not require a specialist for uncomplicated cases. Given these recent changes, many LIPs have not yet had access to the educational opportunities necessary to be prepared to treat HCV. VA HEPC training helps LIPs partner with their support staff to develop the skills to diagnose, prescribe, and successfully navigate their patients through the cure of HCV.

Through our training program, VA HEPC can exponentially increase the capacity of Virginia to treat HCV throughout the state.

Virginia HEPC In-Person and Virtual Training

Virginia HEPC empowers clinics to offer access to hepatitis C treatment locally. To accomplish this, we provide training for your clinic staff to learn about hepatitis C while networking with peers from other clinics. Training topics include HCV treatment, the patient's perspective, and how to make a successful program in your clinic. We strongly encourage clinicians and support staff from each location to attend training.

To expand access, VA HEPC now offers a mix of guided online asynchronous learning, virtual synchronous instruction, and in-person training options.

VA HEPC offers full-day training sessions periodically and can customize trainings to meet the needs of individual clinics, organizations, or communities. While our in-person sessions are typically held in Charlottesville, VA, we also provide trainings at alternate locations upon request.

Registration information will be posted once the date for our next in-person training is confirmed.

We maintain a pre-registration waitlist for in-person and virtual synchronous training. Once we reach the minimum number of committed participants, we schedule the next in-person training. Joining the waitlist signals your commitment to attend and ensures you are among the first to receive scheduling details.

VA HEPC is here to support and help you no matter where you are in your learning journey. If you have questions, we can schedule a meeting to address them. We can share resources and help ensure a smooth implementation process as you start treating independently or refer patients to our telemedicine program.

Learning opportunities do not end after in-person, virtual, or online training! Clinics have access to the following:

  • Consultations with VA HEPC on an ‘as needed’ basis for HCV cases.

  • A monthly community of practice (COP) educational networking series to build knowledge, learn from peers, and keep up to date with hepatitis c treatment guidelines.

  • Support from VA HEPC staff to implement the program in your facility. Reach out with questions anytime! email us at: hepc@sentara.com

“I liked how the sessions didn’t just talk about how to treat hepatitis C, but how to set up a successful program.”
